40 killed in Adamawa bomb explosion

About 40 people were reportedly killed in Maraba-Mubi area of Adamawa state on Thursday morning.

Abubakar Adamu, a mechanic who witnessed the incident told Reuters that the blast set several buses on fire, blaming Boko Haram for the attack.

“There were bodies everywhere on the ground,” Adamu said.

The location is about 30 kilometres from Mubi, the second largest town in the state, which was recaptured by security agents last month after weeks of occupation by insurgents.

Unconfirmed reports say that some soldiers and members of civilian JTF, a local vigilante outfit in the north-east, also died in the attack.

The area is said to have been cordoned off by security personnel.

As at the time of filing this report, the military is yet to issue any statement on the incident.

The rate of insecurity in Nigeria has risen, particularly in the north-eastern part of the country, with government striving to bring the situation under control.

There is hardly any week that attacks from insurgents are not recorded. Only on Tuesday did two female suicide bombers strike at the largest market in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state, killing many and leaving several others injured.

On Thursday, victims of insurgency staged a peaceful rally in Abuja, lamenting their plight and the lack of attention on the part of government.

As the country prepares for a general election in about three months, security has become a major issue discussed among contending politicians.
