10 killed in renewed Tiv-Jukun clash

Ten persons have been killed in the ongoing clashes between Jukun and Tiv ethnic nationalities in Taraba state.

The two groups share a common boundary between Benue and Taraba states.

Speaking with reporters on Sunday, Daniel Adi, chairman of Wukari local government area of Taraba, said aside those killed, several others have been injured while more than nine communities have so far been razed.

He said  his local government is footing the bills of several injured persons currently receiving treatment at the Wukari general hospital.

“As I am talking to you now, several households including Government Day Secondary School (GDSS) Kente, were burnt down by the attackers in the early hours of today,” Adi said.

“I made efforts to contact my counterpart in Ukum LGA in Benue to appeal to his people to lay down their arms and embrace peace.”

The crisis was said to have claimed two lives when it first began on April 1.

David Misal, police public relations officer (PPRO) of the Taraba police command, confirmed the deaths but did not confirm the actual figure.

He said the command has deployed additional officers to restore peace and order in the area.
