Ten-man Manchester United defeated Arsenal 5-3 on penalties in the third round of their English FA Cup encounter following a 1-1 draw after extra time at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.

The clash between the competition’s two most successful clubs was 120 minutes of rollercoaster filled with goals, missed chances, tempers, a red card, and a penalty save crammed together.

The Red Devils took the lead but were pegged back by a red card and Gabriel Magalhães’ equalizer. The Gunners eventually paid for their profligacy in front of goal and failed to make their man advantage count in the penalty shootout.

The game burst into life in the second half when Man United grabbed the lead on 52 minutes through Fernandes from a counter-attack.

The Portuguese applied a brilliant finish from the edge of the area following a long-bursting run and pass by Alejandro Garnacho.

The next twist arrived when Diego Dalot was sent off for a second booking following a foul on Mikel Merino, and the gunners capitalized on the man advantage two minutes later as Magalhães’ shot found the back of the net, thanks to a deflection off Matthijs de Ligt.

The home side was then awarded a penalty minutes later when Kai Havertz went down following minimal contact from Harry Maguire, but Martin Odegaard’s penalty was brilliantly saved by Altay Bayindir, Man United goalkeeper.

The Turkish goalkeeper produced stunning saves to deny Declan Rice twice, while Havertz failed to hit the target from six yards out as Man United forced extra-time.

Both sides tried to nick it in extra-time but Leandro Trossard had his goal-bound effort deflected over by de Ligt, while Joshua Zirkzee’s effort was saved by David Raya, thus requiring the lottery of penalties.

Ruben Amorim’s Man United eventually prevailed 5-3 in the shootout, with Bayindir replicating his earlier save by stopping Havertz’s spot-kick before Zirkzee netted the winning kick to send Man United into the fourth round.

The defeat sees Arsenal exit the FA Cup at the third-round stage for the second consecutive season, while victors Man United await their fourth-round opponent in the draws.
