12 rescued, over 70 missing in Taraba boat mishap

The Taraba Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has confirmed 14 persons dead in the boat mishap that occurred in Mayo-Renewo in Ardo-Kola LGA of the state.

Speaking with TheCable on Monday, Yusuf DanAsabe, secretary of SEMA, said 12 passengers in the boat were rescued, while over 70 are yet to be found.

A boat carrying passengers returning from Mayo-Renewo market on Saturday capsized in Taraba.

DanAsabe said the rescued victims were taken to the hospital for treatment.

“About 12 persons were rescued, 14 recovered dead bodies and I think over 70 are still missing. So rescue operation is ongoing,” he said.

“The rescued victims are at the hospital. The incident occurred from Binnari to Mayo-Renewo, that is the point of leaving and their destination.”

In a condolence message, Agbu Kefas, governor of Taraba, had said 12 lives were lost in the boat mishap.

Also commenting on the incident, Zainab Usman, commissioner for information and reorientation, commended the efforts of persons conducting the search and rescue operation.

“Our heartfelt condolences go out to all affected by the recent boat mishap. We stand by the families in this difficult time, offering our support and prayers,” Usman said.

“The loss of lives is deeply felt, and we honor the bravery of all involved in rescue efforts.”

In September, a boat carrying over 100 passengers capsized in Mokwa area of Niger state, while 24 persons died in another incident that occurred in Njuwa lake in Adamawa.
