Gunmen believed to be members of Boko Haram on Sunday attacked Daku Village in Askira Uba Local Government Area of Borno State, killing 15 people.
According to TheCable’s source in the state, the attackers, numbering more than 100, opened fire on the villagers, before carting away food stuffs and livestock.
“The absence of security personnel on ground made the attack successful,” the source said.
“We don’t have enough soldiers here. Government should come to our rescue. The vigilantes cannot withstand Boko Haram. Assuming we had enough security, they would not have succeeded with this attack.”

He said trading activities were ongoing at the market when the men arrived in different vehicles around 12 mid-day.
“The looting of the market confirms that Boko Haram members are running out of food supplies,” he added.
“There have been many occasions when they cart away food items during operations.”

Meanwhile, three insurgents were reported to have been killed in Chibok, Borno State on Sunday, after men of the local vigilante group confronted them during an attempted attack on the village.
A Chibok resident who spoke with TheCable said one of the attackers escaped, while three were killed and one was arrested.
He also said the villagers were afraid of a reprisal, just like it happened in Attagara village when the insurgents launched a massive attack to avenge an earlier loss of their men to the villagers.
“People have started running away because the man that escaped might inform their members, and they will reinforce to attack the village again,” he said.

Borno, the northeastern state worst hit by Boko Haram’s attacks, hardly survives a week without suffering an attack.
