17 killed as gunmen attack Benue community

The police command in Benue says 15 civilians and two police officers have been killed by gunmen in Ayati village, Ukum LGA of the state.

In a statement, Anene Catherine, the command’s public relations officer (PPRO), said the attack occurred on Thursday.

She said a horde of gunmen invaded the village and opened fire on residents. 

“On 08/08/2024 at about 16:30hrs, while normal daily activities were going on in Ayati village, Ukum Local Government Area of Benue state, a large number of armed bandits invaded the village and started shooting sporadically at members of the community,” she said.

“Police officers within the community responded immediately and were able to repel the bandits.

“However, fifteen (15) people had already sustained gunshot injuries from the attack and were confirmed dead on arrival at the hospital.

“The unfortunate incident also claimed the lives of two (2) police officers who were among the team that responded to the distress call. The corpses have been deposited at General Hospital Ukum and an investigation is ongoing.

“The Commissioner of Police, CP. Hassan Steve Yabanet FCID, Psc (+), visited Ayati for an on-the-spot assessment of the situation.

“While commiserating with the families of the deceased, he assured them of his commitment to fight criminals in the area.”

Hyacinth Alia, Benue governor, condemned the attack, while commiserating with the bereaved.

In a statement signed by Tersoo Kula, his media aide, the governor said his administration would continue to tighten security around the state.

He voiced concerns over the spate of killings “despite continuous security measures and dialogue aimed at restoring peace”.

“Governor Hyacinth Alia expresses deep sadness over the news of another unprovoked attack on Ayati settlement in Ukum Local Government Area where several people were reportedly killed,” the statement reads.

“Governor Alia strongly condemns the attack on unarmed innocent citizens of Benue State by armed bandits, expressing worry that such heinous acts have continued in the state despite strong security presence and the regular dialogue sessions his administration has been holding with stakeholders and traditional rulers seeking the return of peace in Sankera.

“Governor Alia said his administration would continue to use lawful procedures to protect Benue people, particularly Ukum which has been on the front line of attacks lately.”
