19 killed, houses submerged as flood ravages Kano community

At least 19 people have been confirmed dead in Doguwa LGA of Kano state after a vehicle they were traveling was washed away by flood.

TheCable understands that the incident occurred on Friday night following a downpour in the area.

The Yusif Umar Doguwa, village head of Doguwa town, confirmed the incident.

The village head said so far 15 corpses had been recovered while search is ongoing to recover the remaining four victims of the disaster.

He said the vehicle was washed away by the flood after its engine went off in the middle of a bridge while the driver was passing through.

“The engine of the vehicle seized and the car stopped abruptly and before the driver ignited it, the flood washed away the car including the passengers,” he said.

“We have not got any survivor so far even though the search is still ongoing.”

The district head explained that the bridge was submerged by flood following a downpour witnessed on Friday night.

Ali Abdullahi Garko, spokesman of the state Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), also confirmed the incident.

Garko said the state government had sent a delegation under the leadership of Saleh Jili, SEMA’s executive secretary,  to commiserate with the families of the victims.

Kano residents had witnessed heavy downpour that lasted several hours on Thursday morning where several houses were submerged while property worth N60 million were destroyed.
