2 jailed for stealing Coca-cola crates on ‘devil’s instruction’

A Jos magistrates’ court in Plateau state on Tuesday sentenced a 26-year-old driver, Musa Musa, and a 36-year-old security man, Kalawole Kayode, to two months imprisonment each, for selling 250 empty crates belonging to the Coca-cola company.

The duo sold the crates for N174,000.

NAN reports that the Magistrate, Tijjani Zololo, sentenced the accused after they pleaded guilty and begged the court for leniency.

The convicts, in their plea, attributed their behaviour to “the work of the devil”.

“We don’t know what came over us; it was the devil that made us do it,” they claimed.

Zololo said that the sentences were meant to serve as a deterrent to those who might want to engage in similar acts.

The convicts, both workers of the Jos office of the Coca-cola bottling company, were charged with criminal breach of trust and cheating.

The prosecutor, Adekunle Oladunjoye, had told the court that the complainant reported the case to the Anglo-Jos police station on Nov. 10.

He alleged that the complainant, Mohammed Buhari, who is the chief security officer of the Nigeria Bottling Company Jos, told the police that the driver was detailed to deliver the products at Langtang and Wase.

Oladunjoye said the convicts, instead of delivering the crates at the designated address, criminally sold the 250 empty crates, thereafter, at N174,000.

He said that the driver converted the money to his personal use, before the security man on duty uncovered the deal.

“To get the security man to keep quiet, he gave him a bribe of N1,500,” he said.

The commissioner said that during investigation, the accused persons confessed to committing the crime.

The prosecutor said that the offences were punishable under Sections 97 and 309 0f the penal code.
