‘2 Kings’ Olamide and Phyno continue their reign

As Nigerians were still recovering from euphoria and disappointments of the presidential election, two of Nigeria’s biggest native artistes have suddenly released their historic joint album, titled 2 kings.

‘Suddenly’ implies the kind of ‘silent’ release on trend with the likes of Beyonce’s Beyoncé, If you’re reading this by Drake and how we should be expecting the unexpected release of Kanye West’s So help me God. The fans don’t know when to expect or what to expect.

The album has been a long time coming. It has been a little over a year since the announcement of the project in January 2014.

Now that the album is finally out, what you can expect from the 2 Kings album is a 10-track compilation of the best of Olamide & Phyno. Fully capitalising on what could be described as the competitive chemistry between the two rappers.

Many of the songs were produced by his go-to producer Pheelz, who is truly a blessed beat maker from what you’ll experience. You can also expect that Olamide is still the same nasty, slapstick rascal and Phyno hasn’t changed his delicious delivery of ‘only God knows what he is saying’. Wizkid also dropped voice on one of the songs, which was nice.

For those, who eagerly anticipated what would come of this dream collaboration, you’ll definitely not be disappointed. It’s legendary stuff. A heightened artistic blending and bonding of Ibo and Yoruba, Phyno and Olamide, the new school Awolowo and Azikiwe as proclaimed.

The presidential election victory of Muhammadu Buhari was a political alliance between the North and South-West, while this album goes to strengthening ties between the South-West and South East, which sort of fulfills the cycle of Nigerian unity at the end of the day.

It’s a historic album at a historic moment. The first joint album from 2 independent Nigerian artistes, period. Best of all the whole album was made available for free download online, which looks to be the original plan.

They must have realised they had something special after their first successful collaboration titled Ghost Mode off Phyno’s debut album No Guts Bo Glory. Since then Olamide and Phyno have featured on at least half a dozen songs together with consistent end results of high value entertainment.

In an interview on Wazobia FM, Olamide explained what makes their collaborations so prolific: “I don’t know how God makes it happen” he said.

“He brings out the best in me. Anytime Phyno is around, everything changes the ‘ginja’, the flow, the lyrics, my delivery, everything changes and he says the same thing as well.”
