A collision between an armoured truck and a bus has killed at least 20 people and injured 60 in South Africa’s northern province of Limpopo.

In a statement on Tuesday, the region’s transport department said 10 of the injured were in serious condition and have been taken to a hospital.

“Twenty people were tragically killed in an accident after a cash transport truck lost control and crashed head-on with a bus going in the opposite direction on Monday at 1500 GMT,” the statement reads.

A search was ongoing in a river that runs along the highway by police divers for people who might have been swept away, the statement added.

The cause of the accident was under investigation, but heavy rains have been drenching the region in recent days.

On Monday, the South African government declared a national state of disaster in terms of the disaster management act after at least seven people lost their lives to the flood.

So far, seven of the country’s nine provinces have been affected by the heavy downpours.

South Africa’s National Disaster Management Centre (NDMC) said the move to declare a national state of disaster was necessary after receiving frequent reports of flooded homes, overflowing dams and sewage facilities, and damage to roads, bridges, and a hospital in Limpopo.
