2014 WAEC: Performance of students worsens

Majority of the candidates who sat for the May/June 2013 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), performed better than those who sat for the examination in 2014, Charles Eguridu,  head of national office in Nigeria, said on Monday.

According to Eguridu, there was a marginal decline this year, as only an estimated 31.28 per cent of candidates obtained credits in the mandatory five subjects seen as benchmark for good performance, while the results of about 145,795 candidates have been withheld for their involvment in examination malpractice.

“A total of 529,425 candidates, representing 31.28 per cent, obtained credits in five subjects and above, including English Language and Mathematics,” he said.

“The result of 145,795 candidates, representing 8.61 per cent, is being withheld in connection with various types of examination malpractice.

“The cases are being investigated and the reports of the investigations will be presented in November to the Nigeria Examinations Committee (NEC).”

He noted that the failure recorded in English and Mathematics was worse than the results of the past two years.

A total of 1,692,435 candidates sat for the examination.

  1. We’ve stopped lamenting to put our skills where their mouth is! We leverage on technology to bring the much needed Basic Education to boys, girls, parents and “teachers!” They need to learn to read so that can read to learn.

  2. Performance would not get anywhere better in view of the proliferation of Pidgin English everywhere and students scrambling for expo. May God bless Nigeria.
