Peter Mancha, UN Women programme manager for Women, Peace and Security (WPS), says women need more protection to effectively participate in the 2023 election as they are crucial to the electoral system.
According to NAN, Mancha said this on Wednesday during the phase II WPS training for journalists in Gombe.
He said women in Nigeria can help tackle challenges facing the country, adding that it is essential to engage them in leadership and political roles to improve national development.
“Women play critical roles in the electoral systems in the country, hence more protection for them would enable them exercise their rights during the elections,” Mancha said.

“It is important for all stakeholders to put necessary measures in place to ensure peaceful conduct of elections for women to vote and be voted for during the 2023 elections.
“No election will be successful if women are excluded because they have the voting population and play major roles during elections.
“When it comes to decision-making and strategic positions, there is a connection between women in governance and peace and security.

“When women are included in governance or elected, they are able to create a balance and ensure that the needs of men and women are considered.”
He said women’s inclusion in all sectors of life is crucial to achieving sustainable peace and development in the country.
He added that the country is lagging behind in female representation in all sectors, adding that UN Women is working towards closing the gender gap in Nigeria.
