None of our officials died in Rann attack, says Red Cross

The International Committee for the Red Cross (ICRC) says the report that some of its officials were killed during the Boko Haram attack in Rann, a community in Borno state, is false.

The insurgent had stormed the town with sophisticated weapons, killing at least four soldiers, policemen and three humanitarian workers.

However, there were reports that Red Cross officials were among those killed.

In a statement by Aleksandra Mosimann, spokesman of the agency, Red Cross said it did not lose any of its staff in the incident.

According to the statement, all of its staff have been “confirmed physically unharmed” but it said the whereabouts of two midwives working at a clinic in Rann have remained unknown since the attack.

“The ICRC/Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS) had a food distribution ongoing in Rann throughout the week of the attack,” the statement read.

“The staff and volunteers of the NRCS, our partner organization, were present on the ground. All of them have been confirmed physically unharmed.

“At present, we remain concerned about the safety of 2 midwives working in a Ministry of Health clinic in Rann, supported by the ICRC, whose whereabouts we don’t know yet.

“We would like to express our sincere condolences to the families of all persons killed or injured in the attack, including the families of the humanitarian workers tragically killed or injured in Rann.”
