Kaduna to conduct competency test for newly recruited teachers

Nasir el-Rufai, governor of Kaduna, says the state has begun the process of conducting competency tests for the newly recruited teachers.

El-Rufai had sacked 21,780 teachers in October 2017, after they reportedly failed a primary four test. He subsequently employed new ones to replace the sacked ones.

He, however, said it was discovered that some of the new teachers could not write their acceptance letters.

“We are doing our best to restore the integrity of the teaching profession. We have finished tests for primary school teachers and we are going to administer competency tests for secondary school teachers,” el-Rufai said on Twitter.

El-Rufai also said the newly employed teachers will be paid more than the “average civil servants” to attract the best.

He said his government was working on making the state’s education sector one of the top three in Nigeria.

According to him, Kaduna education sector is currently ranked “number 1 in Northern Nigeria and number 12 in Nigeria”.

“Our state government has decided that urban teachers will be paid twenty-seven and half percent higher than average civil servants while rural teachers will be paid thirty-two and half percent higher to attract the best,” he said.

“In education, Kaduna is number 1 in Northern Nigeria and number 12 in Nigeria. We are not satisfied as we are determined to be one of the top three in the whole of Nigeria.”
