At least 30 people, including children, were killed after an Israeli airstrike hit a girls’ school being used by displaced people as a shelter in central Gaza, the Hamas-run health ministry said.

The ministry said the attack that happened on Saturday wounded another 100 people.

Israel’s military said the airstrike targeted a Hamas command and control centre used to store weapons and plan attacks.

The army said militants “used the compound as a hiding place to direct and plan numerous attacks against IDF troops” and “developed and stored large quantities of weapons inside”.

Civil defence workers said thousands were sheltering in the school, which also contained a medical site.

Fighting has been ongoing in Gaza since October 7, 2023, when Hamas launched an attack on Israel.

The Jewish nation has vowed to eliminate the Palestinian terrorist group but has encountered challenges in achieving its goal.

Last month, at least 27 people, including children, were reported killed in an Israeli airstrike at a United Nations (UN) school in Gaza.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) claimed Hamas fighters who participated in the October 7 attack against Israel were housed in a compound in the facility.
