Organisers say the 2024 NPA/GTCO Lagos international polo tournament will begin from January 23 to February 18 with 30 teams competing for prizes in four major and six subsidiary cadres in the country’s premier tournament dating 120 years.
Speaking on Thursday, Olumayowa Ogunnusi, the tournament manager, said competitors would chase after the biggest prize, including the Majekodunmi Cup, in addition to the Open Cup, the Lagos Cup, and the Silver Cup.
Other prizes attached to the events are the Oba of Lagos Cup, Governor’s Cup, Adedapo Ojora Memorial Cup, Sani Dangote Cup, the Italian Ambassador’s Cup, the Independence Cup, Lagos Heritage Cup, Chief of Naval Cup and the Independence Cup.
According to Ogunnusi, matches for the Open Cup will be held from January 23 to 28 while the Majekodunmi Cup will run from January 30 to February 4, after which the teams competing for the Low Cup will take on each other from February 6 to 11.

“In view of the tradition, the low-goal teams will compete for the Silver Cup from February 13 to 18 to round off the month-long tournament,” he said.
Ogunnusi pledged the organisers’ “best effort to complement the sponsor’s resolve to sustain the century-old polo tournament”.
The Lagos polo tournament has for over ten decades promoted cross-cultural boundaries among competitors of diverse origins.
