42 killed as flood hits communities in Niger, Katsina

A total of 42 persons have been killed by flooding in Niger and Katsina states.

TheCable had earlier reported that the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) said over hundreds of communities across Nigeria are affected by flood.

According to the Katsina State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), 24 persons have been killed, while 18,245 people have been displaced by recent flooding in the state.

Umar Muhammad, the Katsina SEMA spokesperson, told NAN on Friday that 16,625 houses were destroyed, while 1,620 farmlands were submerged in Kafur, Danja and Ingawa LGAs.

Muhammad also said the flood destroyed properties and farmlands worth millions of naira across the affected LGAs in the state.

Meanwhile, in a flood disaster report by the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) on Friday, 18 persons were confirmed to have been killed across LGAs in the state.

A total of 49,953 persons were also said to have been affected across 15 internally displaced persons (IDP) camps in the state.

According to the report, the affected LGAs include Rafi, Lapai, Mokwa, Lavun, Borgu, Kontagora, Katcha, Shiroro, Munya, Bosso, Paikoro, Agwara, Mashegu, Wushishi, Gurara, Mariga, Gbako, Magama, Edati, Agaie and Suleja.

“1 death was recorded in Rafi, 1 in Lavun, 1 Borgu, 2 Kontagora, 1 Bosso, 1 Paikoro, 2 Agwara, 6 Magama, and 3 in Suleja,” the report reads.
