‘432 truck accidents, 228 fire outbreaks’ — Lagos lists emergency cases of 2024

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has provided a breakdown of the emergencies it attended to in 2024.

The agency recorded 1,367 incidents from January to October 2024. February ranked highest with 156 cases.

The analysis of the 1,367 incidents showed that the truck/tanker category ranked highest with 432 incidents in the last 10 months, including 297 truck accidents, 7 fallen containers, 110 broken-down trucks, 3 stuck trucks, and 15 fallen trucks/tankers.

The road accidents category ranked second highest with 354 incidents which comprised 334 vehicle accidents, 18 breakdowns, and two others.

Fire disaster category came in third with 228 incidents, which included 211 fire outbreaks, 6 tanker/truck fires and 11 cars/BRTs.

“The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, the agency saddled with the overall responsibility of coordinating emergencies/disasters in the state attended a total of 147 incidents across the state in October 2024, compared to 141 in January, 156 in February, 148 in March, 132 April, 147 in May, 126 in June, 123 incidents in July, 121 in August, and 126 in September, totalling 1,367 incidents attended so far,” the analysis reads.

“Analysis of the 147 emergency incidents attended in October 2024 by the agency reveals that the road accident category ranks highest with a record of 50 vehicular incidents, followed by 43 incidents in the truck/tanker category comprising 35 accidents and 8 broken down trucks in second place, 20 medical incidents in third place, 17 fire disasters which comprise of 16 fire outbreaks and 1 burnt vehicle/BRT incident in fourth place, 10 others in fifth place, 4 collapsed buildings in the sixth place, and 1 incident each in the train and Marine categories at seventh place.”

The analysis, which was released by Nosa Okunbor, head public affairs unit, showed that Alimosho LGA ranked highest with 220 of the 1,367 incidents. 

Ikeja recorded 149 incidents in second place, Oshodi/Isolo LGA recorded 114 incidents in third place, while Badagry LGA recorded the lowest number of incidents with only three emergency incidents.
