Five teenage girls at Unguwar Kaye in Birnin Kebbi local government area of Kebbi state, drowned in Tafkin Madobiya, popularly known as Indian water.
The tragic incident occurred on Tuesday.
The girls were among 10 girls who decided to go swimming at the river after collecting vegetables for their meals.
According to NAN, two of the deceased girls were said to be from the same family.

Samaila Yombe, deputy governor of the state, led top government officials to attend the funeral prayers and commiserated with the families of the deceased.
Some residents of the area expressed shock at the death of the teenage girls and prayed that no more lives would be lost in the river.
