75 abducted Zamfara students regain freedom — after 13 days in captivity

The abducted students of Government Day Secondary School, Kaya, in Maradun LGA of Zamfara state have regained their freedom.

Their release comes 13 days after their abduction.

On September 1, the police said 73 students were abducted from the school following an attack by bandits.

But on its Facebook page on Monday, the Nigeria Television Authority (NTA) said the 75 students have been freed.

In the post, there were two pictures of the released students.

“The seventy-five students of Government Day Secondary School Kaya in Maradun Local Government Area of Zamfara State abducted about two weeks ago regained freedom,” NTA’s Facebook post reads.

No detail was given as to how the students regained their freedom.

But a number of measures have been taken by the authorities to ensure the north-west is safe.

While the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) ordered telecommunications providers to suspend services in Zamfara, some governors ordered the closure of markets from where bandits could get food supplies.

When TheCable visited Kaya a week ago, a student who escaped the bandits’ camp, narrated how they were given a bottle of water for 70 of them to share.
