A seventy-five-year-old man identified as Nwankwo Nweke has been arrested in Anambra for allegedly raping a minor.
Ify Obinabo, the commissioner for women and social welfare in Anambra, said in a statement on Wednesday that Nweke is a barber and neighbour to the eight-year-old victim.
The commissioner said the suspect is from Isi Agu in Akwa south LGA of the state.
“The parents of the 8-year-old, Mr John and Mrs Ogochukwu Ugwuanyi explained that they sent their little baby to get something at a nearby shop around 7 pm,” the statement reads.

“When she came back, they noticed the items were not complete and asked her to return back to the shop after which they started looking for her.
“The parents stated that they quickly went to the shop to look for her but didn’t see which prompted them to raise alarm over her sudden disappearance in the neighbourhood without knowing that the suspect had already taken her to his house and told her not to answer to her name.”
Obinabo said the suspect later chased the girl out of his house when he thought the search team had stopped looking for the victim.

She said the girl narrated what happened to her parents when she returned home, adding that they “immediately” reported the case to security operatives.
The commissioner said the suspect confessed to the crime, claiming that “it was a temptation that made him have carnal knowledge of the girl”.
She said Nweke also promised to be of “good behaviour” if he is pardoned by the state government.
She said the government will not tolerate such acts, adding that anyone found guilty must face the law.
