Eight persons have been confirmed dead following  a clash involving residents of Effium and Ezza-Effium communities in Ebonyi state.

The clash, which occurred on Saturday, was the result of a leadership tussle involving members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in the state.

According to NAN, Aliyu Garba, Ebonyi commissioner of police, who confirmed the deaths during a visit to the community on Sunday, added that 60 persons have been arrested in connection with the incident.

“The crisis was fuelled by a leadership tussle at the area’s branch of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, involving old and new executives,” Garba was quoted to have said.

“The police have ensured adequate security and I doubt if anything would breach the peace in the areas again.

“After investigation, the suspects will appear in court for prosecution. I can also confirm the arrest of stakeholders from the areas and anyone found culpable will be duly prosecuted.”

On his part, Stanley Okoro-Emegha, commissioner for border peace and internal security, commended the police for their swift response, and affirmed that calm had been restored to the areas.

“The commissioner of police has shown that he meant business, as he pleaded with the leaders and the people to allow peace reign, but unfortunately, they did not heed to the advice,” Okoro-Emegha said.

“We conducted a joint operation, which led to the arrest of the suspects. Even those in government, who were involved in the crisis, will be duly prosecuted.”
