President Bola Tinubu has celebrated Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the director-general of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), on her 70th birthday.

Tinubu extended his congratulations to the former minister of finance in a statement issued on Thursday by Ajuri Ngelale, the presidential spokesperson.

The president celebrated Okonjo-Iweala for her service to the nation and efforts towards building resilient institutions — describing her as a remarkable leader.

“President Tinubu also commends the Director-General of the World Trade Organization for being a worthy ambassador of Nigeria, exemplifying the grit, diligence, and brilliance that Nigerians are known for,” the statement added.

“The President prays for many more years in good health for Dr. Okonjo-Iweala and her family.”

Okonjo-Iweala made history on March 1, 2021, when she took office as the WTO DG, becoming the first woman and African to serve in that capacity.

The finance expert was previously on the boards of Danone, Standard Chartered Bank, Mandela Institute for Development Studies, Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security, One Campaign, Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI), Rockefeller Foundation, among others.
