Abayomi Shogunle, head of the public complaint rapid response unit (PCRRU), says prostitution is a sin under the two major religions practised in the federal capital territory (FCT).
Shogunle made the comment following the reactions that trailed the detention and conviction of some women who were arrested for alleged prostitution at different locations within the FCT at the weekend.
The PCRRU said prostitution is a criminal act under the law and that it has been medically proven that it is responsible for the spread of the human immunodeficiency viruses (HIV) and sexually transmitted disease (STD).
“Those making noise on the clampdown on prostitutes in #Abuja; •Prostitution is a crime under the law •P is a sin under the 2 main religions of FCT residents •Medicine says P is spreading HIV & STD, P is lifeline of violent criminals, P don’t pay tax, Nigeria culture frowns at P,” Shogunle wrote.

A mobile court in Abuja had convicted 27 women for prostitution and sentenced them to one month in prison with an option of N3000 fine on Monday.
The court verdict did not go down well with some Nigerians who took to social media to register their dissatisfaction with the raids and arrests.
