Abba Yusuf receiving the Governor of the Year 2024 award for promoting education
Abba Yusuf, governor of Kano, has been honoured with the Leadership Newspapers Governor of the Year award for promoting education.
Yusuf described the award presented at the 17th edition of the Leadership Conference and Awards in Abuja at the State House conference centre as “inspirational and revered.”
The governor dedicated the award to vulnerable children in Kano’s rural communities, underscoring his administration’s dedication to inclusive governance and accessible education.
Yusuf said the award would motivate public officials to reinforce democratic values and prioritise citizens’ welfare.

He called for free and quality education, better access to learning materials, and higher school enrolment, particularly in underserved areas of Kano state.
“The award will push us to do more, to ensure democracy, to ensure free education, to ensure that our students are enrolled in school, and to ensure that academic materials are provided free of charge,” Yusuf said.
He reaffirmed his commitment to bridging the educational divide between urban and rural areas, promising continued investment in grassroots development initiatives.

Other governors recognised as Governor of the Year for 2024 include Umar Namadi of Jigawa, Bala Mohammed of Bauchi, Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom, Peter Mbah of Enugu, and Ademola Adeleke of Osun.
The governors were commended for their efforts in promoting sustainable growth, infrastructural development, and policy innovations in their states.
Also, Nyesom Wike, the minister of the federal capital territory (FCT), received the “Quinquennial Award for Outstanding Person in Governance and Infrastructure”.
