Abba Yusuf says Kano LG polls will hold despite court judgement

Yusuf presents flags to candidates of the NNPP at the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano.

Abba Yusuf, governor of Kano state, says local government elections in the state will hold despite a court ruling prohibiting the process.

On October 22, a federal high court in Kano restrained Sani Malumfashi, chair of Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC), from conducting the October 26 LG polls.

In his ruling, Simon Amobede, the presiding judge, said Malumfashi is “unqualified” to conduct the elections because “he is a card-carrying member of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP)”.

Speaking on Thursday while presenting the flags to candidates of the NNPP at the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano, Yusuf assured residents of a peaceful elections on Saturday.

He noted that KANSIEC is prepared for the conduct of the elections.

“We have satisfied all the conditions laid down by the law and we have completed all necessary preparations for the conduct of the elections on Saturday. As such, the polls must take place as planned,” Yusuf said.

“We are aware of plans by enemies of the state to truncate this election. By the grace of Allah, they will not succeed. The elections will be conducted peacefully and credibly.”
