Tajudeen Abbas, speaker of the house of representatives, has presented a cheque of N18 million to Peter Mbah, governor of Enugu, to support the victims of the tanker explosion in the state.
The Enugu caucus in the house of representatives presented the cheque to the governor on behalf of the speaker at the government house on Tuesday.
In January, several people died after a petrol-laden tanker exploded at the Ugwu-Onyeama section of the Enugu-Onitsha expressway.
Speaking on behalf of the delegation, Nnolim Nnaji, the lawmaker representing Nkanu east/Nkanu west federal constituency of Enugu, said the support reflects the parliament’s tradition of standing with the government and people of Nigeria during challenging times.

“On behalf of the speaker of the house of representatives, we commiserate with the government and people of Enugu state over the tanker incident at Ugwu Onyeama,” Nnaji said.
“We acknowledge that you have done a lot to support both the injured and those who lost their loved ones.
“So, this is a cheque for N18 million to assist the state in further ameliorating their losses and challenges occasioned by the incident.

“The speaker sends his heartfelt condolences once again. And you can continue to count on the speaker’s support and the house.”
While receiving the cheque, Mbah said the donation would reach the tanker explosion victims.
“On behalf of the government and people of Enugu state, I express profound gratitude and deep appreciation for this wonderful gesture,” he said.
“I recall that when the Ugwu Onyeama incident occurred, taking the lives of several of our loved ones, the speaker called and assured us that he was with us in prayers.

“Today, he has also shown us that he is not only with us in prayers but also materially. He has equally come to mourn with us.
“This cheque for N18 million will go a long way in cushioning the effect of the incident on those affected and their families.
“Rest assured that as a government, we will ensure that this gets to them in a transparent, accountable, and just manner.”
Members of the delegation included Martins Oke (Igbo Etiti/Uzo Uwani federal constituency), Dennis Agbo (Igbo-Eze north/Udenu federal constituency), Mark Obetta (Nsukka/ Igbo-Eze south federal constituency), Anayo Onwuegbu (Aninri/Awgu/Oji River federal constituency), and Chimaobi Atu (Enugu north and south federal constituency).
