Tajudeen Abbas, speaker of the house of representatives, has commended the Nigerian media for the “invaluable” role it is playing in the nation’s democracy.
Abbas spoke on Thursday during the inauguration of the renovated press centre and swearing-in of newly elected executive committee members of the house of representatives press corps in Abuja.
The speaker said the renovated press centre is evidence of the house’s commitment to providing the media with a conducive work environment to spark meaningful dialogue between the legislature and the public.
He congratulated the newly elected members, urging them to prioritise the unity and welfare of members.

“The role of the media within a democracy cannot be overstated. As the fourth estate, the media plays a pivotal role in fostering public engagement and upholding democratic values,” Abbas said.
“The cooperation and collaboration between the media and the legislature, as outlined in our House Legislative Agenda, are essential for promoting transparency, accountability, and effective governance.
“I encourage you to make full use of this facility to enhance your reporting and facilitate meaningful dialogue between the legislature and the public.

“I commend the Press Corps for your dedicated reporting on the activities of parliament. Your efforts to keep the public informed about our work are invaluable.”
Grace Ike, outgoing chairman of the house of representatives press corps, commended the speaker for his unwavering support to the media.
She appealed to the speaker to provide the centre with additional working materials like laptops, to enable them report effectively.
Ike urged journalists to always strive to uphold truth and transparency in their reports.

“The inauguration of this edifice, our renovated Media Centre, is a testament to the right honourable speaker’s and indeed the leadership of the House’s commitment to our well-being and the importance of a free press in our democracy,” she said.
“One of our crowning achievements is the launch of our new magazine, “The Green Sentinel,” which stands as an affirmation of our commitment to innovation and excellence in journalism.”
