Tajudeen Abbas, speaker of the house of representatives, says the lower legislative chamber will pass laws to address the “root causes” of insecurity in the country.

Abbas spoke on Thursday while declaring a two-day post-inauguration retreat open for members of the house committee on defence jointly organised by the panel and the National Defence College.

Abbas said the security agencies need to be “well-equipped and adequately funded” to tackle the numerous security challenges in the nation.

“As legislators, we have a critical role in ensuring that the necessary legislative frameworks are in place to support the national security architecture,” he said.

“This includes enacting robust legislation that addresses the root causes of the security challenges.

“We must also strengthen the capacity of our armed forces and other security agencies to respond to these complex and ever-evolving challenges effectively.

“The 10th house will continue to support the efforts of security agencies and actors through adequate funding, the provision of modern equipment, ramping up training, and improving the welfare packages for security personnel.”

The speaker urged the committee members to effectively utilise retreat by asking critical questions that would improve their understanding of the defence sector for proper oversight.

Babajimi Benson, chairman of the defence committee, said there would be continued interaction with the defence establishment towards finding lasting solutions to the insecurity.

Olumuyiwa Olotu, commandant of the National Defence College, said the institution is always ready to partner with the committee.

Olotu noted the critical role that the legislature plays in the democratic journey of every country, especially concerning security.
