Abducted journalist freed after two days in captivity, says family paid ransom

Gregory Maduakolam, a deputy editor at NAN, has regained his freedom after being abducted and held captive for two days.

NAN reports that Maduakolam announced his release via phone calls to colleagues on Saturday.

The deputy editor said he was freed after his family paid an undisclosed ransom.

Narrating his ordeal, Maduakolam said he was brutally treated by hoodlums while in captivity.

Maduakolam said he was abducted in Irete, near Owerri, while inspecting accommodations with a friend and house agent.

“After inspecting the house, I agreed with the agent on the part payment and other fees I will pay,” he said.

“As I was about to board a commercial motorcycle to go back to Owerri, five young men surfaced from the neighbourhood and took me away.”

He said the hoodlums seized his phone and used it to withdraw all the money in his bank account.

He expressed gratitude to God and those who showed concern over the incident, including the management and staff members of NAN.
