Abdullahi Sule, governor of Nasarawa state, says protests cannot overturn his victory at the supreme court.

On Friday, the apex court affirmed Sule as the duly elected governor of Nasarawa, sparking a protest in Lafia, capital city of Nasarawa.

The protesters reportedly burnt tyres and blocked the expressway to Jos, capital city of Plateau state.

Following a petition by David Ombugadu, candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the Nasarawa governorship election tribunal sacked Abdullahi Sule as governor of the state.

The tribunal also declared Ombugadu as the duly elected governor of Nasarawa.

However, Sule appealed the ruling and the judgment of the tribunal was reversed.

Dissatisfied with the appellate court’s verdict, Ombugadu filed an appeal at the supreme court – where he lost out.

Speaking with State House correspondents after meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the Aso Rock villa, Sule said while many people would not accept the supreme court’s judgment, a demonstration cannot change it.

“In every state where the supreme court actually passed judgment, in every one of these states you will find some people are happy and some other people not happy,” the governor said.

“I think people who understand what democracy is all about will understand that the supreme court is the ultimate and is the final and those who appreciate or respect democracy should actually leave it right there because protests or no protest will not change anything, the supreme court has already passed its judgment.

“So in our own case, when we lost at the tribunal, we told everybody, nobody should protest and that’s why nobody protested, but that is the level of maturity that you will see from one political party or the other.

“We are a very mature political party, we are the ruling party in the country, we are the ruling party in the state and we are showing a good example, so that’s why we will not protest.”

Sule said he thanked Tinubu for not interfering with the judicial process.
