Chinedum Orji, speaker of the Abia state house of assembly, has been impeached.
The speaker, who is the son of Theodore Orji, former governor of Abia, was said to have been impeached at an emergency sitting on Tuesday.
Orji was reportedly impeached by 18 out of the 27 members of the parliament.
Chukwudi Apugo, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) representing the Umuahia-east state constituency, was said to have moved the motion for Orji’s impeachment.

The speaker was impeached on the allegations of gross misconduct and highhandedness.
Orji, a member of the PDP, lost his re-election bid to represent Ikwuano/Umuahia-north/Umuahia-south federal constituency in the lower legislative chamber.
He was defeated by Obi Aguocha, candidate of the Labour Party.

The impeached speaker has yet to make an official statement on the development.
Weeks ago, there were rumours that some lawmakers were plotting to impeach the speaker, but the assembly denied the speculation.
