Abia: Police confirm attack on divisional headquarters, say inmates were freed

The Abia police command says two officers sustained gunshot injuries, while inmates were freed during an attack on Bende divisional headquarters.

TheCable had reported that unknown gunmen razed the Bende divisional police headquarters on Wednesday night.

The incident occurred three days after some hoodlums razed some police facilities when they attacked a station in Ikwuano LGA of Abia.

It is also the latest in a series of attacks on security and government facilities, not just in Abia, but in other parts of the south-east and south-south.

On Tuesday, hoodlums burnt the office of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NLDEA) in Amaekpu in Ohafia LGA of Abia state.

Two days earlier, gunmen also razed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) office in Ohafia LGA.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Godfrey Ogbonna, police spokesperson in Abia, said the operatives were shot in the leg by the attackers.

He said a generator house and a multi-purpose building belonging to Bende LGA were also set ablaze by the gunmen.

Ogbonna added that inmates detained in the station were freed during the attack.

“They also burnt two vehicles, including the Divisional Police Officer’s Highlander Jeep, and three motorcycles parked at the station,” he said.

“We do not know yet how they all gathered to execute the attack at the station. Maybe they parked their vehicles away from their target and walked through footpaths to the place.”
