Abia Warriors defender replaces Omeruo in Eagles squad for AFCON qualifiers

Adeleke Adekunle, Abia Warriors defender, will replace Kenneth Omeruo in the Super Eagles set up against Benin Republic and Lesotho in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Omeruo, C.D Leganes defender, was ruled out of the qualifiers due to COVID-19 fears.

Moses Simon and Sadiq Umar were also unable to make it down for the games due to fresh COVID restrictions in France.

Adekunle has now joined John Noble and Anayo Iwuala, two other Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) players who replaced Simon and Umar.

There are growing fears that more Europe-based players will also be forced out of the AFCON qualifiers due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The Super Eagles will take on Benin Republic on March 27 at the Stade Charles de Gaulle, Porto-Novo.

Three days later, they will battle Lesotho at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos.
