Abuja estate gatehouse burnt as riot breaks out over ‘accident involving okada riders’

Commercial motorcycle operators, also known as okada riders, on Sunday, stormed the Same global estate in Dakwo, Lokogoma area of the federal capital territory (FCT).

The entrance to the estate was set on fire, and the inferno affected the gatehouse of the estate.

The incident was said to be a riot over an accident involving some okada riders and a vehicle.

A motorist had reportedly hit three okada riders, and the car was alleged to have been driven into the estate.

Meanwhile, when contacted, Josephine Adeh, spokesperson of the federal capital territory (FCT) police command, told TheCable that no house was razed during the incident.

Adeh, however, confirmed that an accident occurred in the area, and described the situation as “unfortunate”.

She also said police operatives have been deployed to the area and the situation is “under control”.

The development comes days after riot broke out at Dei-Dei market in Abuja over an incident involving an okada rider.

An accident said to have occurred in the area led to riot, which resulted in the destruction of shops and vehicles.

Several persons were also said to have sustained gunshot wounds during the incident.
