The federal capital territory (FCT) chapter of the National Association of Persons With Disabilities (NAPWPD) has asked for the implementation of minimum accessibility standard codes in the nation’s capital.
The association made the call during the commemoration of International Wheelchair Day observed on March 1.
The International Wheelchair Day emphasises the importance of advocating for an environment that accommodates people with mobility problems.
While speaking at a press conference, Chris Agbo, chairman of NAPWPD in the FCT, called for the modification and retrofitting of public spaces and facilities to align with relevant accessibility standard codes and universal design principles.

Agbo stressed the importance of adhering to building codes and minimum accessibility standards.
He said building control departments should not approve new structures that are not following standards.
While outlining more demands meant to foster a more inclusive and accommodating society, he said disability laws should be established where there are none.

He also emphasised the need to protect the rights of wheelchair users and asked that the government be committed to allocating needed resources for the modification and retrofitting of existing buildings.
