Acting IGP orders probe of officers who killed unarmed civilian

Mohammed Adamu, acting inspector-general of police (IGP), has ordered an investigation into the killing of an unarmed civilian.

In  a video which went viral on social media, some security personnel were seen killing a civilian. The victim was making an attempt to run when he was shot.

Some other persons were made to lie on the ground with guns pointed at them.

Some Twitter users said the incident happened in Benin, Edo state capital.

One Isaac Oselenome had tweeted: “I can’t confirm his crime, but what could he have done to warrant this nonsense??? #Johnnyjustdrop Cc; @segalink @falzthebahdguy.”

In response to the incident, the police tweeted saying: “The IGP has ordered full blown investigation into the incident.”

Thereafter, the police complaints unit said they had launched a probe into the incident.

“RT: We’ve viewed a viral video purported to be @PoliceNG officers & an alleged gunshot sound. Video said to be the shooting of an unarmed man in Benin-City today. Investigation has been launched, tracking No. #PCRRU908001. Pls contact us if you’ve additional info.@YomiShogunle,” the unit tweeted.

About three hours later, the unit said those who shot the unarmed civilian were not policemen and that those who laid on the floor were kidnappers.

“RT: UPDATE ON #PCRRU908001.It has been established that the armed men in the viral video are not officers of the @PoliceNG but operatives of a sister security agency,” it tweeted.

“All the men rounded up in the video are members of a violent kidnap for ransom syndicate who were tracked down to the said location. Media stations in Edo state are currently giving the arrest a wide publicity. cc: ACP @YomiShogunle.”
