Gambians, in their thousands, converged on Independence Stadium in Bakau to celebrate the inauguration of Adama Barrow and the country’s independence day on Saturday.
Barrow defeated Yayha Jammeh in the West African country’s presidential election in December.
Although Jammeh called Barrow to congratulate him on the electoral success, it took a lot of convincing for him to hand over power.
Long time leader, Jammeh, agreed to step down after being prevailed upon by leaders of Economic Community of West African State (ECOWAS).

Barrow is only the third president in the history of The Gambia.
He was sworn in last month in a low-key event in neighbouring Senegal, where he was on exile before his predecessor agreed to step down.
An accomplished property developer, Barrow had never held public office before winning the presidential election.

Jammeh has since fled to Equatorial Guinea.
