Adebola Akin-Bright, the 12-year-old boy whose small intestine reportedly went missing following surgery in a Lagos hospital, is dead.

His death was confirmed by the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) on the institution’s official X account on Wednesday.

The hospital said he died on Tuesday night.

“The entire management and staff of Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) commiserate with the family of Adebola Akin-right, who passed on yesterday, Tuesday 19th September, 2023, after two surgeries performed in a private hospital and a corrective surgery in our hospital,” the tweet reads.

LASUTH said arrangements for the transfer of Akin-Bright to Great Ormond Street Hospital in the UK were at an advanced stage before his demise.

Akin-Bright’s ordeal became public knowledge after Deborah Abiodun, his mother, disclosed his predicament in a viral video.

Abiodun said the boy had undergone surgery after he was diagnosed with a ruptured appendix at a private hospital in Ile Epo, Lagos.

She said after the surgery, her son suffered complications that resulted in intestinal obstruction.

She disclosed that his intestine started leaking seven days after a second operation at the same facility.

Shortly afterwards, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, governor of Lagos, visited Akin-Bright at LASUTH, where he assured the family that “everything will be done” to get him better.

The Lagos assembly also constituted an ad hoc committee to investigate the issue and report to the house in the next two weeks.
