Victor Olunloyo
Ismail Adewusi, former postmaster-general of the federation, has described the late Victor Olunloyo, former governor of the old Oyo state, as a “rare gift” that Nigeria never fully appreciated.
Olunloyo, who served as governor of the old Oyo state from October 1 to December 18, 1983, died a few days before his 90th birthday.
In a statement on Sunday, Adewusi said Olunloyo was a genius whose brilliance in mathematics and public service set him apart.
“The late Olunloyo was a global phenomenon in Applied Mathematics and Number Theory. At a time that such areas of studies remained in the realm of esoteric academic pursuits, Olunloyo had emerged as a master of the Numbers,” Adewusi said.

“But his depth of knowledge transcended the numbers game. He was deeply knowledgeable in history, literature, and to a very appreciable reach, law, and philosophy.”
Speaking on Olunloyo’s values, Adewusi recalled his aversion to mediocrity and his commitment to merit, regardless of background.
“Perhaps, this explains his unapologetic support for us when we sought the mandate of our dear state to be the governor,” he added.

“The late Olunloyo did not believe where you come from or the faith you profess should be the determinants in the choice of who leads in governance. He was a man for the best, and he simply wanted the best in everything.”
Adewusi expressed sympathy with the Olunloyo family and commiserated with the people of Ibadan and Oyo state.
He urged Seyi Makinde, the state governor to find a befitting way to immortalise the late academic and political icon.
Also mourning the former governor, Reuben Fasoranti, Afenifere leader, said the Yoruba socio-political group was “deeply saddened” by the news of Olunloyo’s death.

“His vision for a better future, leadership, and commitment to the people of Oyo State will forever be remembered,” he said.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the people of Oyo State and all who knew him. May his soul rest in eternal peace, and may his family find solace in the enduring impact of his life and work.”
