Adhere to fire safety code or face sanctions, FFS chief warns owners of public buildings

AbdulGaniyu Jaji, the controller-general of the Federal Fire Service (FFS) and other officers during the review of fire service training school curriculum.

AbdulGaniyu Jaji, the controller-general of the Federal Fire Service (FFS), says all public buildings, including markets, offices, places of worship, and schools, must adhere to the fire safety code or face sanctions.

Jaji spoke in Abuja on Monday during the inauguration of the committee on the research and development of the federal fire service training curriculum.

The FFS chief was making reference to the recent fire outbreaks at Karu Market in Abuja, Dangote refinery, and a section of Christ Embassy Church in Lagos.

He said the lack of accessible roads to the scene of the fire accident at Karu Market was a major obstacle for firefighters.

Jaji added that the experience at the market and many other places was part of the reasons Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the minister of interior, intensified efforts towards ensuring that the 1964 law, which established the FFS, was reviewed to empower the service to properly sanction defaulters.

On the development of a new curriculum for training men in the fire service in the country, he said the aim is to promote efficiency and professionalism in tandem with global best practices.

Machie Olisemeka, the chief consultant for curriculum development and a former assistant controller-general of the FFS, said the document will match the new trends in firefighting and prevention.

Olisemeka said the curriculum has been designed to meet international standards, adding that men of the FFS can now work in any part of the world as core professionals.
