Mohammed Bello Adoke, former attorney-general of the federation, has expressed regrets that he was not in the country to share the last moments of Aloysius Iyorgrer Katsina-Alu, former chief justice of the federation who died on Wednesday.
In a tribute he shared with TheCable, Adoke — who is currently on self-exile over alleged threats to his life — described Katsina-Alu as a “legend”, adding that “I was an adopted Son with a special seat at his table”.
He wrote: “When great men pass to the great beyond, they leave indelible marks in the sands of time and their good works and legacies endure for generations. They are remembered not for their wealth and personal attainments, but for their benevolence and humanity. Such was the life of Late Hon. Justice A.I. Katsina-Alu, GCON, and retired Chief Justice of Nigeria. He was a friend, father figure and benefactor to many Nigerians especially those of us in the legal community.
“He had a towering image and his pursuit of fairness and justice was legendary. His core values of patience, perseverance, tolerance and forthrightness were amply demonstrated in his lifetime and in his dealings with people. I particularly benefited from his benevolence in no small measure. I was an adopted Son with a special seat at his table. I had the rare privilege of sharing my thoughts with him and drawing from his rich fountain of knowledge. He advanced my legal career to the pinnacle of the profession.

“It was against this background that I received the grieving news of the passing of this great legal icon who has through his reasoned pronouncements /decisions and administrative acumen as head of nation’s highest court, contributed immensely to the development of the legal profession in Nigeria. I am particularly pained, that prevailing circumstances have conspired to rob me of the opportunity of sharing his last moments on earth with him. I will surely miss his fatherly role in my life.
“I am however consoled by his enduring legacies and distinguished service to the nation and the legal profession. As we mourn this great Nigerian and gentleman per excellence, I join his family, the legal community and millions of his well wishers around the world in praying to the Almighty God for the repose of his soul. I also pray for divine fortitude for the family to bear this irreparable loss.”
Adoke was attorney-general and minister of justice from 2010 to 2015 while Katsina-Alu was chief justice from 2009 to 2011.
