The excitement is palpable as the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023 kicks off in Cote d’Ivoire, showcasing the best of African football talent. However, beyond the cheers and goals, it is imperative to address the missed opportunity this football festival represents for the West African region in terms of economic integration.

Picture this: citizens from Nigeria, Ghana, Togo, Benin, and other ECOWAS countries should have been able to hop on a bus or drive to Abidjan to witness the football spectacle. However, the reality at the borders is a stark contrast. Corrupt border officials often frustrate genuine travellers with incessant demands for bribes, obstructing the smooth movement of people and goods.

At the heart of the matter is the unfulfilled promise of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) treaty, which advocates for the free movement of people and goods across member states. AFCON 2023 should have been a catalyst for the region to break down the barriers hindering the seamless flow of trade and commerce.

This football festival could have been a golden opportunity for the region to demonstrate its commitment to the principles of ECOWAS, allowing entrepreneurs and football enthusiasts alike to traverse borders without unnecessary hindrances. Imagine the positive impact on the Ivorian economy if entrepreneurs from neighbouring countries flooded the stadiums and local businesses.

According to relevant statistics, the potential economic gains from increased regional integration are substantial. The free movement of goods and services could lead to a surge in cross-border trade, fostering economic growth and development. Unfortunately, the current state of affairs stifles this potential, hindering the region from reaping the full benefits of AFCON.

As the matches unfold on the pitch, it is disheartening to witness the off-field barriers that prevent the region from fully embracing the spirit of ECOWAS. AFCON 2023 should serve as a wake-up call for West African leaders to address the systemic issues at the borders and prioritise the implementation of policies that facilitate the free movement of people and goods.

In conclusion, the time is ripe for West African nations to capitalise on the opportunity presented by AFCON 2023. Breaking down regional walls is not just about scoring goals on the football pitch; it’s about scoring economic victories that can uplift the entire region. It’s time to turn the spotlight on the need for genuine regional integration, ensuring that AFCON becomes a stepping stone towards a more united and prosperous West Africa.
