The Democratic Republic of Congo defeated 10-man Egypt on penalties after playing out a 1-1 draw in their AFCON round of 16 tie on Sunday.
The tense encounter fraught with poor decision-making in the final third needed penalties to separate both sides.
DR Congo took the lead when Machuk Elia nodded a deflected cross into the net on 37 minutes — but the Central Africans gave away a penalty in added time.
Mustafa Mohamed converted the spot kick to restore parity for Egypt with his fourth goal in as many matches.

With no further goals at the end of regulation time, the game moved into extra time, during which Egypt’s Mohamed Hamdy was dismissed for a second bookable offence on 97 minutes.
Despite the red card, the seven-time AFCON champions held on to force the game into penalties which ended 8-7 in favour of DR Congo.
In the other game of the day, Emilio Nsue, the leading AFCON goalscorer, missed a penalty kick for Equatorial Guinea as they were defeated by Guinea, who qualified for the AFCON knockout stage for the first time.
