AfDB appoints Solomon Mugera, ex-BBC Africa head, as new communications director

African Development Bank (AfDB) has appointed Solomon Mugera, former head of journalism at BBC Africa, as its new communications and external relations director. 

In a recent statement, AfDB said Mugera’s appointment would take effect from October 1, 2021.

Mugera had announced his departure from the BBC via his Twitter account on August 27.

He said: “Thank you, #BBC for the opportunity to serve the organisation and our audiences in #Africa and around the world.

“It’s been nearly 23 years of an epic journey, working with an amazing @BBCAfrica and teams from across the #BBC. From me, my dear wife @Karouzy and our sons, Thank You”.

AfDB said the Kenyan national brings over 20 years of experience in editorial leadership, communication, budget management, and stakeholder outreach.

The bank said Mugera will manage corporate communications and external relations with key stakeholders, including media, civil society, foundations, the private sector, African countries, and international organisations.

AfDB added that he would be responsible for internal communication and engagement with the bank group staff, lead its messaging and global strategic media relations.

Commenting on his appointment, Mugera said: “It is an honour to work for the African Development Bank Group and support its vision for the continent.

“This is an institution that is leading Africa’s effort to transform itself and make a real difference to the lives of millions of its people.

“The Bank has the talent, the expertise, knowledge and the story that needs to be told across Africa and to a global audience.”

“Mr Murega will support the Bank Group’s vision and outreach effort to make the priorities, activities and accomplishments of the Bank known by both internal and external audiences,” Akinwumi Adesina, AfDB president, said.

“He is a highly respected and motivated media professional, with a solid track record in journalism and leadership.”

Mugera joined the British media house in September 1998, and in 2011 he became BBC Africa boss as the first African to assume the role.
