Afenifere, the pan-Yoruba sociopolitical organisation, has asked President Bola Tinubu to issue an executive order for the creation of state and LGA police.

The group said there is an urgent need for the federal government to be more innovative in addressing insecurity across the country.

Over the past few years, there has been repeated clamour for the creation of state police to complement the efforts of the federal police in addressing insecurity in states.

On May 16, speakers of the 36 state houses of assembly supported the ongoing process by the national assembly to create state police.

In a statement on Saturday, Jare Ajayi, spokesperson of Afenifere, called for the installation of closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras and other modern technologies in strategic areas in the country.

Ayayi lamented that armed robbers and kidnappers have taken over many roads in the south-west zone

“There are indications that Tinubu is desirous of putting an end to this deleterious menace,”  PUNCH quoted him as saying.

“Towards the end of January this year, he approved the procurement of digital tracking tools to enhance the apprehension of bandits, terrorists and armed robbers.

“On Monday, April 22, this year, he used the occasion of addressing participants at the African counter-terrorism summit which opened on that day in Abuja to assure everyone of his government’s readiness to ensure greater security.

“Unfortunately, recent happenings have not shown that the president’s desire in this respect is being worked upon.

“President Tinubu should get state and local government police off the ground immediately through the invocation of an executive order while the process of amending the constitution continues.”

The Afenifere spokesperson said the federal government must also enhance the welfare of Nigerians as part of the measures to end insecurity.
