NPFL preview: After winning Aiteo Cup, how far can Akwa United go?

Inspired by Abdu Maikaba, Akwa United had an enventful season in the 2016/2017 campaign.

TheCable takes a look at their prospects for the 2017/18 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) season.

Having enthralled the NPFL with their energetic brand of possession-play last season, the Promise Keepers will be looking to improve on their fourth-place finish.

By winning the Aiteo Cup, coach Maikaba will have a crack at the CAF Confederation Cup. The challenge will, therefore, be to balance domestic and continental priorities.

In the likes of Ajibola Otegbeye, Sunday Faleye, and Adeshina Issa Gata, the club have the attacking personnel to challenge for the league.

The players, on the other hand, have fully adapted to the gaffer’s tactical approach and should be well poised to begin the campaign positively.

Here are three players who may make a mark this season.

Musa Newman, the difference maker

Last season was sensational for the frontman whose intelligent hold-up play and 15 goals in all competitions drove Akwa United to the Aiteo Cup success.

Great signing in Ajibola Otegbeye?

The ‘goal king’, as he is known, made a bright start to life at Akwa United with 10 goals in pre-season games. He has proven to be a productive acquisition from Sunshine Stars, and his goals, if consistent, will help to reduce the reliance on Newman.

The Adeshina Issa Gata factor

Technically gifted and hard working, the winger possesses the ability to not only push Akwa United to the top of the NPFL table but to also help his new team in the continental fixtures.

With all at their disposal, only time will tell if the Promise Keepers can challenge for the NPFL shield and also defend their Aiteo Cup title.
