Again, PDP postpones south-west congress, moves venue to Osun

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has again postponed its south-west congress earlier scheduled for April 10.

The party said the congress will now hold on April 12, while the venue has also been moved from Ibadan, Oyo state capital to Osogbo in Osun.

The decision was communicated on Thursday by Kola Ologbondiyan, PDP spokesperson, who added that the party is working to ensure “a seamless and unifying congress.”

Ologbondiyan wrote via his Twitter handle: “PDP NWC (national working committee) after extensively discussing the issues of concern in the South West resolves as follows: Moves the venue of the South West Congress to Oshogbo, Osun State; the South West Congress is scheduled for Monday, April 12, 2021.”

A week ago, the main opposition party informed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) that the congress alongside the others earlier suspended have been fixed for April 10.

But the postponement may be connected to ongoing efforts to reconcile the leadership challenges the party is facing in the south-west.

Seyi Makinde, governor of Oyo, and Ayodele Fayose, former governor of Ekiti, have been at loggerheads over who controls the soul of the party in the region.

It was the prolonged crisis that forced the PDP leadership to initially postpone the congress earlier scheduled to hold months ago.

On Wednesday, the party said that it has begun moves to reconcile Makinde and Fayose as part of efforts to win the zone in the 2023 elections.
