Some residents in Suleja LGA of Niger state have taken to the street to protest against the high cost of living in the country.

Speaking with TheCable on Wednesday, Sadiq Suleja, a candidate of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) for the Suleja constituency, said the protesters converged at about 9 a.m. to protest the hardship in the country.

The protesters were said to have carried placards with inscriptions “Nigerians are suffering, stop the hardship now”.

“It was a brief protest today. The people I saw were not much in number, probably, they had not properly engaged the security agencies,” Suleja said.

“The purpose of the protest was the high cost of living. They converged at the IBB Murada down to the Morocco area.

“The protest started around 9 to 10 a.m. I doubt if they protested till 11 a.m. because if they had, more people would have joined.”

On Monday some residents in Minna, Niger state capital, blocked major roads in the Kpakungu area to protest the economic hardship in the country.

The country has been experiencing instability and a rise in the prices of commodities since the removal of the petrol subsidy in May 2023.

When contacted for comment, Wasiu Abiodun, police spokesperson in the state, said there was no protest in Suleja, adding that no protesters were arrested.

“No protest in Suleja,” Abiodun replied in a terse message.
