Age has nothing to do with good governance, says 27-year-old commissioner

Seun Fakorede, commissioner for youth and sport in Oyo state, says age has nothing to do with good governance.

In an interview with BBC Yoruba, the 27-year-old commissioner said the age of Methuselah had nothing to do with the wisdom of Solomon, as seen in the Bible.

Fakorede said good governance has to do with wisdom and knowledge of how to make the lives of the people better.

“The governor, engineer Seyi Makinde, nominated me to be one of the commissioners in the state. I see it as a big opportunity for the youths,” he said.

“I will be one of the youngest people to achieve this, but like I have always said, age has nothing to do with good governance. Everything is based on using wisdom and knowledge to ensure good governance.

“I know that for someone like me, Oyo is move forward. We are leaders in Oyo and we will do things accordingly and I pray God help us.  The governor is a good person, a father and with everything he has been doing, we can see that he is ready to work.”

A group of citizens in the state had protested the appointment of Fakorede, saying he is a nominee from the opposition party.

Fakorede said he has no godfather and that he would work hard to ensure that his nomination is not considered a mistake.

“I am using this medium to tell the people of Oyo state that my nomination will not be considered a mistake, as I am ready to serve them with all my strength,” he said.

“When the governor was speaking during his campaign, he said he has no godfather. Same applies to me, I have no godfather anywhere, I only believe in God and I have been doing my work.”

The appointment of Fakorede was confirmed by the state house of assembly on Thursday.
